Each year, on the last weekend of September, Galway City celebrates the Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival, the most internationally recognised Irish festival after St Patrick's Day and the world's longest running Oyster Festival. Throughout the Irish food festival, there will lots of tantalising events for all to enjoy; seafood trails, oyster hot spots, oyster opening (shucking) championships including the Oyster 'Olympics' or World Oyster Opening Championship, foodie talks & tasting events in some of Galway’s best  restaurants, food producer tours, an intimate Food village at The Festival Marquee, a Mardi Gras style Gala Event through the streets of Galway along with family activities, live music, cooking demonstrations, 'Hot Oyster Awards' cooking challenge and more. Established in 1954, The Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival has welcomed over half a million visitors, consumed more than 3 million oysters – washed down with champagne and stout whilst listening to some of the best musicians in Ireland.

DENMARK SHUCKER WINS 2013 WORLD OYSTER OPENING CHAMPIONSHIP

Jesper Knudsen, representing Denmark, shucked his way to the title of the Guinness World Oyster Opening Champion at the 59th Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival with an adjusted time of just 2 minutes and 17 seconds to open the required 30 oysters. A relative newcomer to the Oyster World, this was the first world title for the 29 year old Dane.

100,000 OYSTERS TO BE SAVOURED IN GALWAY THIS WEEKEND

Over 100,000 native oysters will be consumed this weekend at Ireland’s longest running food festival - the 59th Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival. Running from Thursday 26th until Sunday 29th September 2013, 30,000 national and international festival-goers are expected to descend upon the City of the Tribes, with initial projections of €9 million generated for the local economy.

FREE FAMILY FUN AT THE GALWAY OYSTER FESTIVAL

An afternoon of family fun awaits Oyster Festival goers on Sunday 29th September.  Get in the mood with the pirate fancy dress and let the kids enjoy circus lessons from 12pm-3pm, face painting, family games, oyster shell painting - all FREE for kids under 12.
